When Should an Email Marketer Start Planning Their 4th of July Email Campaigns?

The Ideal Timing for Starting An Independence Day Email Marketing Campaign

Page Visited

The 4th of July is perhaps the biggest holiday event of the summer. As the day draws nearer, people around the country will be soaking up festivals, outside grilling, fireworks and all the trimmings that typically accompany the occasion. While this day sees many people having a blast, it is also a wonderful opportunity for the savvy email marketer. Ideally, you want to start planning for it right after closing out your Flag Day program, which should be around the middle of June. This will give you enough time to plot strategy and prosper from the holiday rush. Execution is crucial, so here are some solid tips that may come in handy when planning your 4th of July email campaigns.

Display Your Patriotism

In the United State, the 4th of July is celebrated to highlight the independence and freedoms American citizens currently enjoy. On this day, Old Glory is sure to be waving proudly throughout the nation. The patriotic nature of this holiday is the perfect excuse for using your 4th of July email campaigns to flash your patriotism. For you, it could be as simple as giving your email template an Independence Day inspired design. You could also craft your offers or promotions around the occasion. At the very least, this approach can help you chalk up valuable goodwill points that you may be able to redeem with our audience at a later date.

Go Social

For an email marketer, the only thing better than building a campaign around the 4th of July is combing those efforts with other channels. Right now, the ideal channel would have to be social media. Whether it is Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, integrating social media into the mix can provide a way for your holiday offers and promotions to travel beyond the inbox. Luckily, more email marketing software offer social sharing buttons and other features that enable the easy integration of these two powerful channels. The key for you will be creating 4th of July email content  your readers want to share in their social hangouts

Engage Before the Fourth

Of course you want to plan your 4th of July email campaigns before Independence Day, but you can start rolling them out before the holiday actually comes as well. For example, if you have a regular newsletter, you could use it to tell subscribers about festivals, fireworks displays, and other activities related to the 4th of July in their location starting in April. Readers will appreciate this, and may even show that appreciation by giving you their business when you finally do throw your sales pitch.

The 4th of July is a festive holiday that presents a gamut of possibilities to the opportunistic email marketer. Your competitors realize this as well, but that is no reason to not seize the moment. With the right strategy in regards to planning and timing, it could be you who has the edge in the inbox.

Start With A Business Opportunity Successful Home Based

It’s one thing to decide to start a business opportunity based at home and another to actually get started. Studies have shown that millions of Americans have decided that online businesses will help you to overcome financial difficulties and have seriously considered starting their own and only one tenth of them go with it. Then a few withered down to a group still very low as many of these brave entrepreneurs are not fully prepared with a lot of knowledge and skills needed to survive in the highly competitive arena of online market.

Many people do not understand that business success online depends heavily on how to start a home business opportunity. And most claim to have a great chance to get started is to have a business plan. A business plan will help you describe each factor that will affect your business. This will include all of your finances, costs, operational problems, resources, market strategy, target audience, and much more. Your business plan will help you be prepared for any unforeseen event with your company to reduce the risks that may cause the fall of a business opportunity.

Create a good business plan can be a problem, especially with people who have not one ounce of the unique business experience. Business plans can be complicated and time-especially those that are very comprehensive and well laid out. Therefore, you may need to have a superior course of business you can get online. Download PPC: Know These Tips Before You Start

download ppcIf you are perusing SEO-software reviews to look for PPC software, it is important to keep a few things in mind — especially if you are new to pay-per-click advertising.

First, the overall approach to keyword research is (usually) the same whether one is looking for organic or PPC traffic: the so-called “long-tail” is better. For example, if your website sells music downloads, it is better to target “[band name] mp3 downloads” rather than merely “music.” In terms of organic traffic, people searching for “music” may be looking for websites ranging from “music sheets” to “music equipment” to “music theory.”

Download PPC

Very few of these individuals will be interested specifically in “music downloads,” so it is typically a waste of time and money to optimize a website for a general keyword like “music” — the click-through rate in Google’s search-results will be extremely low. Moreover, it will take forever to rank on the first page of Google for such a generic term since too many SEO and SEM marketers target so-called short-tail terms — in order to attract the high level of traffic for the general term — because they do not know what they are doing.

The same problems exist when targeting generic keywords in PPC campaigns. Take the prior example. The per-click price for a PPC strategy that focuses on “music” will likely be extremely high since, again, most online-marketers do not know what they are doing. The high demand for the keyword — though a poor target in itself — drives the bidding-prices skyward. Fewer people target “[band name] mp3 downloads,” so the price will be lower. (Disclosure: I have not pulled the exact data for these terms since the principle generally holds true. Of course, exceptions will exist — but they prove the rule.)

Here is the takeaway: It is better (and cheaper!) to have ten people click on a PPC advertisement when eight will likely make a purchase rather than have 100 people click on the ad when only five will generate revenue. It is all about the likely conversion-rate. The more narrow and “niche” the focus — the cheaper the keyword, the greater the sales, and the higher the ROI of the PPC campaign.

Second, ignore the Google Adwords option to have your PPC advertisements appear first — for a higher price — within horizontal or vertical blocks of PPC ads. All online-marketers understand that the tops of websites, pages, and blog posts are pieces of “real estate” that have higher values than items further down as far as clicks, conversions, and ad placements. But the issue is a little more-complicated than it first appears.

The nature of this observation — which is indeed accurate — stems the fact that fewer people scroll down towards the bottoms of websites or blog. As a result, the items appearing at the top will be viewed by all visitors — even if they leave a site quickly (“exit,” in SEO terms) — but those at the bottom will not.

Still, take a moment to remember how PPC ads appear in Google search-results:

download ppc

These are the Google search-results that appeared when I searched for “seo” (from my home in Israel, hence the targeted PPC results). The Wikipedia entry appears first in the organic results, but the PPC advertisements are above that entry. In addition, paid results are listed at the top of the right-hand sidebar.

PPC ads appear without the user needing to scroll to the bottom of the page to see them (since Google’s primary function, just like any company, is to earn revenue). If a native English-speaker scans the page, he will see all of the paid advertisements within a fraction of a second — regardless of the order in which they appear. (If you are reading this from another country, insert your language of choice.)

The take-away: The PPC-cost for advertising-placements is higher for a top ranking within these two blocks since many SEO marketers, again, believe that “first” is always better. But this is a case when the exception is more important than the rule. Do not waste money to gain a higher placement within the blocks when it is not necessary.

When looking for download PPC-software reviews, be sure to analyze how the platforms function. If they do not generate the best, niche keywords at the lowest prices, look elsewhere.

U of Chicago Researchers Reveal The Key To Finishing Everything You Start

The road to hell may or may not be paved with good intentions, but the road to failure surely is. Take a good look at the people you work with, and you'll find lots of Good Starters — individuals who want to succeed, and have promising ideas for how to make that happen. They begin each new pursuit with enthusiasm, or at the very least, a commitment to getting the job done.

And then something happens. Somewhere along the way, they lose steam. They get bogged down with other projects. They start procrastinating and miss deadlines. Their projects take forever to finish, if they get finished at all.

Does all this sound familiar? Maybe a little too familiar? If you are guilty of being a Good Starter, but a lousy finisher — at work or in your personal life — you have a very common problem. After all, David Allen's Getting Things Done wouldn't be a huge bestseller if people could easily figure out how to get things done on their own.

More than anything else, becoming a Great Finisher is about staying motivated from a project's beginning to its end. Recent research has uncovered the reason why that can be so difficult, and a simple and effective strategy you can use to keep motivation high.

In their studies, University of Chicago psychologists Minjung Koo and Ayelet Fishbach examined how people pursuing goals were affected by focusing on either how far they had already come (to-date thinking) or what was left to be accomplished (to-go thinking). People routinely use both kinds of thinking to motivate themselves. A marathon runner may choose to think about the miles already traveled or the ones that lie ahead. A dieter who wants to lose 30 pounds may try to fight temptation by reminding themselves of the 20 pounds already lost, or the 10 left to go.

Intuitively, both approaches have their appeal. But too much to-date thinking, focusing on what you've accomplished so far, will actually undermine your motivation to finish rather than sustain it.

Koo and Fishbach's studies consistently show that when we are pursuing a goal and consider how far we've already come, we feel a premature sense of accomplishment and begin to slack off. For instance, in one study, college students studying for an exam in an important course were significantly more motivated to study after being told that they had 52% of the material left to cover, compared to being told that they had already completed 48%.

When we focus on progress made, we're also more likely to try to achieve a sense of "balance" by making progress on other important goals. This is classic Good Starter behavior — lots of pots on the stove, but nothing is ever ready to eat.

If, instead, we focus on how far we have left to go (to-go thinking), motivation is not only sustained, it's heightened. Fundamentally, this has to do with the way our brains are wired. To-go thinking helps us tune in to the presence of a discrepancy between where we are now and where we want to be. When the human brain detects a discrepancy, it reacts by throwing resources at it: attention, effort, deeper processing of information, and willpower.

In fact, it's the discrepancy that signals that an action is needed — to-date thinking masks that signal. You might feel good about the ground you've covered, but you probably won't cover much more.

Great Finishers force themselves to stay focused on the goal, and never congratulate themselves on a job half-done. Great managers create Great Finishers by reminding their employees to keep their eyes on the prize, and are careful to avoid giving effusive praise or rewards for hitting milestones "along the way." Encouragement is important, but to keep your team motivated, save the accolades for a job well — and completely — done.

Will Google Start Showing Ads and Other Content in Unused Whitespace in Your Browser Window?

By Bill Slawski, on June 16, 2011, at 10:59 am

When you design a web page with fixed dimensions, set for a specific display resolution, sometimes visitors will arrive at your page with a higher web page resolution level. What this means is that there can be empty space showing in their browser window when viewing your page. There are other times when someone visits your page, and their browser window isn’t using their whole monitor display, and they might resize their browser to include a higher resolution level, which can then cause unused browser space to appear.

An image from the patent showing two different displays; one with a limited amount of unused browser space, and one with a large amount of unused browser space and additional content items.

A Google patent application published this morning describes how Google might identify when such unused space exists, and include content within that space. The patent filing tells us that this content can include text, images, videos, animations, and other types of content that can be displayed in a browser.

Advertisements? Search Features?

While the patent filing provides a fair amount of detail on how they might determine when such white space exists, it doesn’t give us any examples of the kinds of content that might be displayed in that empty space, such as advertisements, search features like Google’s Quick Scroll, news or informational content, related search information, social network information, or other content.

We’re also not told if the unused whitespace might be relevant to the content on the web page being visited, the person doing the visiting, or something else entirely.

How would you feel about Google showing content in unused whitespace on a visitor’s browser if you own the site being visited? Would it make a difference if it was advertising that you might earn money with?

If you follow my link above about Google’s quick scroll feature, one of the things I mentioned that I didn’t like about it was that it covered over some of the content on the pages being visited. Displaying the quick scroll box in unused space appears to be a way of avoiding that problem. Would Google potentially display other search features in unused browser space?

Would the addition of content items like this cause webpages to load more slowly and impact the amount of bandwidth used by browsers and site owners? Are Google’s efforts to speed up the Web at least partially focused upon enabling them to add additional features like this to pages?

The patent is:

Utilization of Browser Space
Invented by Xin Zhou
Assigned to Google
US Patent Application 20110145730
Published June 16, 2011
Filed March 19, 2010

Abstract

Systems, methods and computer program products for utilization of browser space are described herein. An embodiment includes determining unused browser space on a display and selectively rendering one or more content items in the determined space based on dimensions of the display. The embodiment further includes, determining dimensions of a window in which the browser is displayed, wherein the dimensions include a height and a width of the window.

Furthermore, the embodiment includes selectively displaying the content items in the unused browser space based on the width of the browser window, item width of each of the content items and a gap width between the content items. In this way, unused browser space on a display is effectively utilized by selectively rendering one or more content items in the unused browser space.

Would you consider allowing Google to show additional content items in unused browser space on your pages?
